Many people look forward to travel and new adventures, whether it’s by exploring a different city, hiking in the mountains, or traveling to a new country. For the youth at The House DC, taking a day trip to the National Harbor was like going to a new country.
Most of the youth from The House DC have rarely, if ever, left their community. Many have never even been to downtown DC because they don’t have the resources they need to do so. A couple of weeks ago, staff members took twenty kids to the National Harbor, and needless to say, it was a life-changing experience for the youth.
Riding the ferris wheel for the first time in their lives was the highlight of their month. The youth were praying and crying as they experienced what riding a ferris wheel is like. Amanda* said, “Once I stopped crying and saw the view, it was like I was on an airplane. I’ve never been on an airplane before, but I think that’s what it must be like.” Corey* said, “I faced some fears today. I feel like I can do anything now.”
Going to the National Harbor or riding a ferris wheel can seem like a mundane activity for many, but for the youth at The House DC, it was like going to Disneyland.
